The Tale of Genji: A Visual Companion
Melissa McCormick
Princeton University Press, 2018
7.5 x 10.2 inches, 288 pages

Each chapter of this book is just two spreads long—one containing a reproduction of the album alongside a translation, transliteration, and transcription of the calligraphy, and the second containing commentary on each chapter paired with details from the reproduction related to the text. The key challenge was to create a structure for the book that accommodates the varied text lengths in each chapter elegantly. Another interesting challenge was to harmonize the Japanese and English typography throughout.
