The Tale of Genji: A Visual Companion
Melissa McCormick
Princeton University Press, 2018
7.5 x 10.2 inches
Hardcover, 288 pages

This volume contains the first full reproduction of the Genji Album of 1510, the oldest dated set of Genji illustrations known to exist. The album’s exquisite paintings and calligraphy leaves are accompanied by the chapter title in Japanese, English, and Japanese transliteration as well as a translation, transliteration, and transcription of the calligraphy text. Supporting each of the 54 album reproductions, is a brief essay by the author paired with details from the album that support her text. The book can be explored on many levels, providing a vivid introduction to Genji for those who are new to it, and an invaluable visual companion to the tale for those who know it well.
